Driving an electric or hydrogen-powered vehicle

Information on weight limits and how to safely drive zero emission vehicles that have a maximum authorised mass between 3,500kg and 4,250kg.

Details

If you hold a category B driving licence, you can drive an electric or hydrogen-powered vehicle with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 4,250kg. The vehicle must be a zero emission vehicle.

The normal MAM limit for petrol and diesel vehicles with a category B licence is 3,500kg.

This guidance provides more information about the MAM limits for zero emission vehicles and safety advice for using these heavier vehicles, including:

  • driving the vehicle
  • preparing the vehicle for use
