D2 waste exemption: depositing waste from train toilets
The D2 exemption allows older rolling stock not fitted with appropriate collection facilities to deposit sanitary waste on to the track.

This exemption allows train operators to empty waste from a train toilet or sink on to a railway track.
Type and amount of waste you can deposit

You can deposit up to 25 litres of waste per discharge.聽
There is no limit on the number of discharges you can make.
Conditions
You must comply with the exemption conditions. The waste you discharge must match the waste code, type of waste, and quantities allowed.聽
You cannot:聽

discharge waste from the toilet or sink of any other type of vehicle, such as a bus聽

discharge any other types of waste on to a railway track聽
-
bring in sanitary waste from trains operating on a different railway line
Registering a D2 waste exemption鈥�
You must register with the Environment Agency.
A railway track is an example of a linear network. A linear network is an area where the length runs across more than one postcode. It is not a single site.
You can register once to cover waste activity along the whole linear network.
You will need to:聽聽

register in the name of the operator, at their registered office or main place of business聽聽

identify the network to which the exemption applies

use this registration form to register a linear network鈥�
More than one railway operating company can register D2 at the same linear network at the same time.
