Hybrid activism: paths of globalization in the Brazilian environmental movement
Abstract
This chapter makes the case for 'hybrid activism', seen as a hybrid between local and global action. The cases from the Brazilian environmental movement show how hybrid identities, meanings and trajectories of mobilization are built through two mechanisms identified in Tilly鈥檚 (2005) discussion of inequality. 鈥楨mulation鈥 takes place when local actors 鈥榬eproduce organizational modes already operating elsewhere, importing configurations鈥, while 鈥榓daptation鈥 happens when local actors use existing models, but also invent procedures.
